Barcelona defeat to Alaves brought several streaks and records to an end

Barcelona may already have the La Liga title secured, but their defeat against Deportivo Alaves has brought an abrupt end to several impressive records that had defined Hansi Flick’s first season in charge.

Simply put, the narrow 0-1 loss did more than simply end Barcelona’s hopes of reaching the 100-point mark, as it also stopped one of the most remarkable attacking streaks in Spanish football this season.

For the first time in the entire La Liga campaign, Barcelona failed to score.

Halting a great run

Before the defeat to Alaves, Flick’s side had found the net in each of their previous 35 league matches.

The Catalans had built a reputation throughout the season for their relentless attacking football, regularly overwhelming opponents with intensity, movement and creativity in the final third.

Now, however, the dream of reaching 100 league goals is also starting to fade away, as Barcelona currently sit on 91 goals with only two matches remaining.

Last season, Barcelona scored 102 goals, but matching this figure looks increasingly unlikely now.

Interestingly, Alaves entered the match having conceded in 20 consecutive league fixtures, making Barcelona’s blank even more surprising considering the attacking level they have shown all season.

More to the story

The defeat also added another unwanted statistic to Barcelona’s campaign. Across all competitions, it was only the fourth time in 55 matches that Flick’s team failed to score.

The first came away at Chelsea during a difficult Champions League group-stage defeat.

The second arrived against Atletico Madrid in the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg, while Atletico also managed another clean sheet in the Champions League quarter-finals at the Spotify Camp Nou.

Furthermore, Barcelona’s run of consecutive victories stops at 11 matches, while their incredible streak of league games scoring at least one goal, stretching back into last season, finishes at 55 matches.
