FC Barcelona defender Eric Garcia is enjoying an outstanding season. Since Hansi Flick spoke with him in January 2025 to assure him that he was part of his plans and should not leave for Girona, the player’s performances have improved significantly.

In the current campaign, he has established himself as one of Barcelona’s key players. Although his role differs from that of Lamine Yamal, Raphinha or Pedri, his importance within the squad is comparable.

Spain call-up inevitable?

As such, MARCA reports that Eric is knocking on the doors of the Spanish national team, pushing for a return heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

It was quite surprising that the national team coach, Luis de la Fuente, did not call the 25-year-old defender up in the ongoing international break for the friendlies against Serbia and Egypt.

After all, Eric has demonstrated excellent form throughout the season, be it as a centre-back or at right-back, making himself an ‘omnipresent’ figure in Flick’s Barcelona.

Flick’s trust in Eric has been absolute, and the defender has responded accordingly. It is no coincidence that he is the most frequently used player in the squad this season.

Durability, versatility, and an eye for goal, Garcia has demonstrated his value in all facets of his game so far at Barcelona.

Based on his current level, he would be expected to be a regular in De la Fuente’s squad, which has surprisingly not materialised so far.

Compared to the central defenders currently selected, he stands out in many aspects of the game, with the added advantage of his ability to perform in multiple roles.

As such, Eric continues to knock on the La Roja doors and a strong end to the season could compel De la Fuente to include him in the squad for the World Cup.
