João Cancelo’s latest standout display has strengthened calls inside Barcelona for the former Benfica full back to remain at the club. The Portugal international impressed in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Atlético de Madrid.
The dressing room and coaching staff are said to have reached a unanimous view that he should stay, with Hansi Flick also praising his impact. O Jogo reports that the 31-year-old’s performance on 4 April underlined his value in his second spell at the club.
The report adds that his recent form is shaping the board’s assessments of his future, while Cancelo aims to be in Portugal’s World Cup squad.
Signed in the winter window as cover for the injured Andreas Christensen, he has shown he can be far more than a stop-gap.
Sporting director Deco could pursue a permanent deal, which might be worth 15 million euros to Al Hilal.
In a recent interview, Cancelo spoke about his bond with Benfica, saying he would like to return and set out the conditions for doing so.
