La Liga giants Barcelona secured for themselves a piece of Spanish football history in their meeting with RCD Mallorca on Tuesday.
Barcelona were of course back in action last night, welcoming Mallorca to Catalunya’s capital for a La Liga clash.
When all was said and done, the Blaugrana emerged on the right side of a 1-0 result, owing to a solitary Dani Olmo strike early in the 2nd-half.
Had it not been for some wasteful finishing, coupled with the brilliance of Leo Román in the visitors’ goal, though, the scoreline could have been much, much more one-sided.
In fact, so dominant were Hansi Flick’s Barca over the course of the 90 minutes last night, that their performance gave rise to history.
This comes amid confirmation on the part of statisticians Opta that:
‘FC Barcelona attempted 40 total shots against Mallorca, equaling the record in a single La Liga match since (records began) in 2003/04 (40 for Real Madrid against Zaragoza in 2011).’
