Until this past weekend against Getafe, Dani Olmo had been quite underwhelming for FC Barcelona in the 2025/26 season.

The 27-year-old attacking midfielder, in his second season back at the club, had seemingly dropped behind Fermin Lopez in the pecking order.

Barcelona never lost confidence in Olmo

Amidst his slow start, Olmo’s agent Andy Bara visited Barcelona earlier this month and held an informal meeting with club officials to discuss his client’s situation.

And, as reported by SPORT, Barcelona assured Olmo and his camp that their confidence was absolute and that everything depended on him maintaining the level he had already shown in past spells.

It is true that until then his involvement had been intermittent, and naturally, for someone eager to contribute more, there was some unease.

But it was made clear to the player and his representative that their faith in him remains unwavered. And Olmo’s response on the pitch was immediate.

Against Getafe, Olmo played the full 90 minutes, something that had not happened since January 2025, and was decisive in Barcelona’s victory, scoring one goal and providing a brilliant assist.

At Estadi Johan Cruyff, the crowd chanted his name, and every touch drew anticipation, especially the backheel pass that created the opening goal for Ferran Torres.

Time to step up

Olmo knows how things work with Hansi Flick – play well and you get rewarded with a start. That is how things have panned out this season for players like Ferran Torres, Marcus Rashford, and Fermin.

And following the Getafe game, the door to further opportunities is wide open for Olmo. The three-week injury-enforced absence for Fermin and Gavi’s long-term injury means the starting spot is now the 27-year-old’s to lose.

Barcelona, for their part, have full confidence in Olmo and his abilities, and it is now up to him to showcase his quality more consistently.
