The Camp Nou outfit got off to a flying start when Andreas Christensen drilled home an effort after just three minutes, but sloppiness in defence allowed Girona to equalise a minute later. In a low-key first half, Xavi’s side re-took the lead on the stroke of half time through Robert Lewandowski, who converted a penalty after Miguel was deemed to have felled Yamine Lamal after a VAR check.

But Girona turned it around in the second half, chiefly through midfielder Portu. The Spaniard was sent just after the hour and levelled the game with almost his first touch, prodding home from close range after good work from Artem Dovbyk.

Two minutes later, they were ahead as Portu played in Miguel, whose effort took a wicked deflection from Jules Koundé to leave Marc-Andre Ter Stegen well beaten.

With the momentum all with Girona, Ter Stegen made one excellent save to keep the scoreline close, but could do nothing minutes later when Portu volleyed past the German, to make it 4-2 and send Girona into ecstasy.

Barcelona had no response to the onslaught, and never looked like getting back into proceedings as they slumped to their sixth defeat of the season, and officially confirmed what had long been assumed.

The result not only crowns Real Madrid as LaLiga Champions, but also sees Girona leapfrog Barcelona into second place with four games left to play of the season.
