A leading member of the attacking ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona on Tuesday took another step towards history.
This came owing to his exploits in the club’s latest outing on the continent.
Barcelona of course marked their return to action yesterday evening, welcoming Benfica to Catalunya’s capital for the 2nd leg of a Champions League Last-16 clash.
When all was said and done, the Blaugrana emerged comfortable 3-1 winners, to cruise through to the quarter-finals courtesy of a 4-1 aggregate triumph.
The leading protagonist in as much was Raphinha, who, after notching the only goal in the tie’s first leg, followed up with a fine brace on Tuesday.
As much means that the Brazilian is now the outright leading goalscorer in this season’s Champions League, with 11 goals to his name.
Not only that, but Raphinha has moved another step closer to making fresh history at Barcelona.
As revealed by Mundo Deportivo, the record for most goals scored by a Blaugrana player in a single Champions League campaign is 14, set by Lionel Messi back in 2011/12.
With sights set firmly on the competition’s finale, Raphinha, in turn, could have as many as five games to notch four more goals, to surpass Messi’s benchmark.
