The future of Robert Lewandowski at Barcelona continues to attract attention, and now one of the most respected voices in Polish football has weighed in on the subject.

Legendary striker Zbigniew Boniek has discussed the options ahead of the Barcelona forward should he decide not to renew his contract beyond this summer.

Speaking about the natural course of a footballer’s career, Boniek first addressed Lewandowski’s current stage, offering a realistic yet respectful assessment of his evolution.

“It’s an inevitable process. Robert is 37 years old and has aged a bit. As long as he keeps playing football, he will score goals, but he’s not the same player he was a few years ago.

“The captain is ageing with dignity, and I hope to see him in the United States or in an Arab country next season.

He will play two more years to earn some extra money,” said Boniek as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.

Interest from MLS

Interestingly, these comments are perfectly in sync with growing speculation around Lewandowski’s future, particularly amid interest from abroad.

As reported before, Chicago Fire recently held a meeting in Barcelona with the striker and his agent, Pini Zahavi, which reinforced the idea that Major League Soccer could be a genuine option.

Boniek also addressed rumours linking Lewandowski with a possible move to Italy, but he was far more sceptical about that scenario.

Drawing on his own experience as a star for Juventus and AS Roma, the former striker explained why Serie A would present a different challenge.

“If he ended up at San Siro, he would have problems. Playing in Italy is more difficult than in Spain.

“In my opinion, his signing for Milan seems unlikely, especially because the Italians don’t pay as much as the Spaniards.

“Milan has Luka Modric, who is 40 years old, in midfield, but being a centre forward in Serie A means constantly colliding with 190 cm centre-backs, elbowing and committing fouls.

“I don’t know if that would be a challenge for Robert.”

Praise for the Barcelona man

Despite his realism about age and future moves, Boniek was emphatic in his admiration for Lewandowski’s legacy.

He concluded by praising the Barcelona striker’s place in history and his lasting impact on Polish football.

“He is undoubtedly one of the best, and for some, the best Polish footballer in history, who has generated a lot of positive emotions among the fans.

“And he will be the leader in this statistic for the next 100 years. He has been an incredible player and will be able to play for a while longer,” he concluded.
