Barcelona are weighing up paying the eight million release clause for Racing Santander full-back Jorge Salinas before the clause doubles following promotion.
His clause is eight million in LaLiga Hypermotion, rising to 16 once the team goes up. Sport reports that Barcelona, and the player’s agent, argue Racing remain a Segunda side until one July, so the lower fee still applies.
Salinas, 19, is under contract until 2029 and was pivotal in Racing’s climb to LaLiga. The club hoped to keep him but interest spans Germany, Portugal, Italy and England, with Celta de Vigo, Atlético de Madrid and Barcelona linked. Barcelona are ahead of the rest, and the player is happy.
At Camp Nou, the view is to avoid negotiating that amount and instead move to lodge what they believe the clause states before the higher price takes effect within a week. With the defender on under-19 duty, plans are on hold until a decision arrives.
Any subsequent legal row could set a precedent. Whatever happens around one July, Joan Laporta may still need to open talks with Racing to prevent delays or the move slipping away.
