Inigo Martinez extended his contract with Barcelona for another season, keeping him at the club until June 30, 2026, as announced by the Catalans on Thursday.
Hansi Flick’s trust in the 33-year-old defender during his first season in charge was a key factor in Barcelona’s decision to press ahead with the extension, which was finalised after securing the approval from LaLiga.
However, as Mundo Deportivo reports, Martinez’s new contract does not include an additional clause for a further extension beyond 2026 based on appearances.
When the former Athletic Club captain joined Barcelona on a free transfer in 2023, his two-year contract included a one-year extension option if he played at least 60% of matches in his second season at the club.

That threshold has not yet been met – he has played 52% of games this term – but the club proceeded with the renewal regardless given his importance in Flick’s setup.
However, the new contract that the defender, who returned to the Spanish national team for the first time since November 2023, has signed does not include another option for an appearance-based extension beyond 2026.
Martinez, who will turn 34 years old in a couple of months, has become a vital part of Barcelona’s defence this season, forming a strong partnership with Pau Cubarsi.
The Spaniard has featured in 33 of the team’s 42 matches this season. With Barcelona, he has already won the Spanish Super Cup – his first and only major trophy and hopes to add more before the season ends.
