It has now been an overly summer transfer window for Barcelona, who have only secured one signing at this stage. However, it is a deal that they are becoming increasingly satisfied with.
Last month, Barcelona finalised an agreement with Newcastle United to sign Anthony Gordon for €80m. The 25-year-old was seen as the ideal winger addition to Hansi Flick’s squad, and while many pundits questioned the move, the Catalans have already been in no doubt that their decision will turn out to be the right one.
Gordon is one of the players that Barcelona have been watching during the ongoing 2026 World Cup, and as per Diario AS, they have been very pleased with his performances – in particular, his big contribution during England’s recent 3-2 victory over co-hosts Mexico.
Gordon had started the World Cup in relatively slow fashion, but he has started to pick up. Barcelona never panicked when he dropped out of the England line-up, as they saw as being very capable of making a telling contribution on the biggest stage – which he has, thus justifying their decision to sign him even more.
Barcelona’s move for Gordon came out of nowhere, but it was a deal that had been worked on for months. Flick and sporting director Deco were in agreement that the former Newcastle player was an ideal fit for the way the German manager sets up his team, and thus, the expectation is that he will perform very well during the 2026-27 season.
On paper, Gordon does appear to be a smart signing for Barcelona, given that his tireless nature perfectly aligns with Flick’s style of play. However, €80m is a lot to pay for a player that won’t be a starter upon arrival, so he will be under pressure to perform when he does get a chance.
