Barcelona’s decision to sign veteran defender in January finally paying off

When Joao Cancelo returned to Barcelona in January on a short-term loan deal, not much was expected as he was largely brought in as a backup.

For the better part of the first month and a half, Cancelo did not make much of an impact either, with game-time coming at a premium.

But that has changed drastically in recent weeks, with the defender even emerging as one of the most critical players for Barcelona.

Double bonanza for Cancelo

Indeed, Barcelona’s decision to bring back Cancelo in January is finally paying off in two ways.

For one, the Portuguese international is producing brilliant performances, notably emerging as one of the best players for the team in the recent 3-0 win over Atletico Madrid.

The full-back was a complete menace for the opposing defence as he set up multiple opportunities and gelled well with attackers.

Cancelo had performed well even in previous matches, including in the 3-0 win over Levante.

But in addition to his performance, Cancelo has now become a lifeline of sorts for Barça thanks to his versatility.

That is because the Catalans have been dealt with injuries to both their fullbacks, Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde.

While no return time has been specified for Kounde, Balde could be ruled out for a period of around four weeks.

That means Cancelo could have a key role to play in these final few months of the season, alongside Eric Garcia.

Both players are capable of operating on both defensive flanks, and if Kounde and Balde are indeed ruled out for the coming month or so, their availability is going to be vital.

This will also be an opportunity for Cancelo to prove his mettle and potentially earn a permanent move to Catalonia in the coming summer.
