Barcelona star Lamine Yamal has on Sunday secured for himself a fresh piece of international football history. This comes owing to his exploits in the colours of Spain.

Luis de la Fuente’s La Roja are of course currently locked in action at the World Cup, in a meeting with Saudi Arabia.

The European champions headed into proceedings in the knowledge that nothing but a victory would suffice, following an opening day draw with minnows Cabo Verde.

And inside 10 minutes, the aforementioned Lamine sent Spain on their way to precisely that…

After Mikel Oyarzabal slid a pinpoint delivery across the face of goal, the young winger arrived at the back post to slot home from close range.

And as alluded to above, in the process, Lamine etched his name ever further into the history books of world football.

As revealed by statisticians Opta:

‘Lamine Yamal is only the second player aged 18 or younger to open the scoring in a FIFA World Cup match – the other was a 17-year-old Pelé for Brazil v Wales in 1958.’
