Barry Bannan has reunited with some past and present Sheffield Wednesday players for a special night in Sheffield...

There are certain players who transcend eras at a football club, and at Sheffield Wednesday, Barry Bannan is undoubtedly one of those iconic figures that fans will never forget.

For over a decade, the Scot has been the heartbeat at Hillsborough — a diminutive midfielder with a giant influence, dictating tempo, demanding standards, and absolutely dragging the team forward when it mattered most. In every sense, he became a modern Wednesday legend.

As captain, Bannan’s importance stretched far beyond his wand of a left foot. He set the tone in games and in training, fronted up in difficult moments, and carried the weight of expectation through promotions. More importantly, he took on extra responsibility through relegation battles and ownership uncertainty.

Teammates followed his lead, while supporters saw in him the fight and edge that defines the club’s identity. That is why his recent departure to Millwall feels particularly jarring. This is not merely the loss of a talented midfielder but the loss of a figure who embodied everything Wednesday are about.

Bannan was Sheffield Wednesday’s voice, pulse and personality rolled into one. In some ways, it's still raw for Wednesday fans losing him, given it has only been five weeks since his departure. He has also faced Wednesday for 61 minutes in the third of his five appearances for Millwall already.

However, he has returned to Sheffield recently for a special event, reuniting with familiar faces and old friends from Sheffield Wednesday past and present. Alongside Steve Bracknall, Bannan hosted an event for Sheffield Children Hospital Charity.

Among those pictured includes former goalkeeper Kieren Westwood, current club captain Liam Palmer, and Southampton's Shea Charles after a successful stint on loan with the club last term. Henrik Pedersen was also present at the event, as shared by the charity on Instagram last night.

The post read: "What a night, Sheffield. 💙. An Evening with Barry Bannan and Friends has been an incredible night for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity and the Bright Young Dreams campaign.

"Held shortly after Barry Bannan’s departure from Sheffield Wednesday, the evening marked the end of an unforgettable chapter at the club - while celebrating the lifelong bond between Barry, the fans and the city. And if the atmosphere was anything to go by, this won’t be the last time we come together.

"From powerful stories and big laughs to incredible generosity, Sheffield once again showed what it’s made of. Together, you’re helping transform mental health support for children and young people."

Barry Bannan returning to Sheffield Wednesday feels inevitable at some stage

For all the disappointment surrounding his exit, it would be no surprise if Bannan and Sheffield Wednesday were destined to cross paths again in a footballing sense one day. Some bonds in football have a certain permanence, and Bannan’s connection with Hillsborough supporters is certainly one of them.

Even at 36, the modern game has shown that technically gifted midfielders can prolong their careers, particularly those who rely on intelligence and positioning rather than pace. A short-term return as an experienced head in the dressing room would not be the strangest reunion in the next year or two.

Wednesday would need a lot to go right away from the pitch for that, which is why perhaps the more natural route lies in coaching. Bannan has long looked like a manager-in-waiting on the pitch. He is constantly organising, demanding standards, and instructing teammates through matches.

His understanding of Wednesday’s culture, expectations, and pressures would make him a popular and potentially powerful figure behind the scenes. Whether in boots or on the touchline, it is easy to imagine Bannan back in South Yorkshire someday.
