Latest news from FC Bayern

The first step has been taken: thanks to the narrow 3-2 first leg win in Manchester, the FCB women have put themselves in a good position for the second leg. In a tumultuous match at the prestigious Old Trafford, Pernille Harder put the Munich side ahead after just two minutes. After Maya Le Tissier (24') equalised for the hosts, it was the Dane again (71') who restored the lead with her second goal. It was also the 33-year-old's third consecutive brace. Lundkvist brought United back into the game with a header in the 76th minute, but Momoko Tanikawa (84') had the final and decisive say with her goal to make it 3-2 and give the Munich women the win.

The dress rehearsal ahead of the second leg went according to plan for the double winners: with their 2-0 win at home against 1. FC Nürnberg at the weekend, the Munich side equalled the club record of 18 league wins in a row and took another step towards defending their title.

The opposition: Manchester United

Manchester United's women have already had a long journey in the Champions League: the Red Devils secured their first-ever appearance in the premier club competition in European women’s football via the qualifying round. With four wins and two defeats, head coach Marc Skinner's team missed out on direct qualification for the quarter-finals by just a single point. The English side were seeded and faced Atlético Madrid in the play-offs where, thanks to two commanding victories, United ultimately secured a spot among the top eight teams in Europe.

Skinner's team suffered a serious setback in the Women's Super League at the weekend: The Red Devils lost 3-0 to rivals and league leaders Manchester City and slipped from second to fourth place.

Pre-match quotes

José Barcala: "We made a few adjustments and analysed United's processes again. But it could be a completely different game, they might well change their tactics. That's why it will be extremely important for us to manage the game well. We expect very aggressive and well-organised opponents. The fans' presence will give us tremendous energy and will also carry us through difficult phases. This support is the result of the connection this team have built up with the fans over the past few years."

Giulia Gwinn: "It's the greatest thing ever to play in the Champions League in front of your own fans. We're very strong as a collective and have no fear, but a healthy respect for United. We know what we're capable of and won't leave anyone on their own on the pitch. Everyone is on board, everyone knows what's at stake."
