According to Kicker, Bayer Leverkusen are working to re-sign Moussa Diaby and have held concrete talks with Al-Ittihad about a Bundesliga return.

Benfica Lisbon and Inter Milan are also interested in bringing him back to Europe. Leverkusen see the 27-year-old as a complement to summer signing Afonso Moreira on the left.

Diaby made 125 Bundesliga appearances for Leverkusen across four seasons to 2022/23, scoring 31 league goals. He moved to Aston Villa for €55m in summer 2023, then joined Al-Ittihad a year later.

The 11-times-capped France international’s market value peaked at €60m in December 2023, and is now estimated at €25m. Wages and the Saudi club’s demands could make a permanent deal difficult.

His pace remained a hallmark, clocked at 36.52 kilometres per hour in 2022/23, fourth fastest that season and once top 10 all time. In 2021/22 he delivered 13 goals and 12 assists in 32 league matches.

He excelled as a winger on either side under Peter Bosz, then operated more narrowly under Xabi Alonso while linking with Jeremie Frimpong. If he returns, he could feature mainly on the right, cutting onto his stronger left foot.
