Bayern Munich chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen questioned the appointment of referee João Pinheiro after their Champions League semi-final exit to PSG.
They drew 1-1 in the second leg and were eliminated 6-5 on aggregate. “It’s astonishing, to say the least, that a referee with only 15 Champions League appearances is allowed to take charge of such a match. And that perhaps also explains some of the decisions,” he told Sky Germany.
Two of the most debated moments arrived before the interval.
First, Nuno Mendes avoided a second yellow card for handling after the referee had already whistled for a Bayern foul.
Soon after, João Vitinha’s clearance struck teammate João Neves on the arm inside the area, prompting Bayern’s bench to appeal for a penalty. VAR did not intervene due to the law on accidental handball between teammates.
