Bayern comeback within reach: Musiala takes important step

There was visible relief at FC Bayern on Friday and pure happiness for Jamal Musiala. After exactly 146 days of suffering, the 22-year-old was allowed to shoot on goal again for the first time. What sounds like a small detail is actually a huge milestone on his way back to the team – and an emotional moment that made the entire Säbener Straße sit up and take notice.

The German international, who suffered a serious fracture to his fibula and multiple torn ligaments in his left ankle in the Club World Cup quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain on 5 July, was back on the pitch for the first time a month ago. Now came the next big step: receiving the ball, dribbling between dummy opponents, finishing – and scoring. Only in the mini goal, but with a significance that goes far beyond that. As reported by BILD, Musiala was beaming as if it had been a goal in the Champions League semi-final.

It was clear to see on Friday that Musiala’s progress has been rapid of late. Under the guidance of rehab coach Simon Martinello and co-trainer Floribert N’Galula, Musiala started with coordination exercises on the running ladder before working his way up to his first goals via variable passing and dribbling sequences. This was followed by explosive sprints, both short and longer – a clear sign that Musiala is regaining confidence in his musculoskeletal system.

His rehab programme is now in week 21. The workload is being systematically increased and exercises with the ball are becoming more and more frequent. In recent weeks, it has already become clear that Musiala is gaining speed and stability – and is now being integrated back into sequences that were previously only used in team training.

Return to team training? Patience is required

While Alphonso Davies has now been back training with Vincent Kompany’s team for almost two weeks following his cruciate ligament rupture, Musiala’s comeback is still some way off. However, the fact that he worked with N’Galula on Friday is an important indication: the assistant coach often accompanies players in the final phase shortly before they return to their colleagues.

Despite the positive signals, however, the following still applies: Musiala’s return to the pitch is unlikely to take place this year. The risk of a setback is too high, the region around the ankle and fibula too sensitive. Bayern are planning cautiously – and at the same time for the long term. Everything points to Musiala being able to return fully at the start of 2026 and celebrate his comeback in an FCB shirt.

For the club, for Kompany and for the fans, the latest development alone is a reason to rejoice, because Bayern is not getting just any player back – but one of the most influential faces of the coming years. The path is not yet fully travelled, but Musiala is back on track.
