Bayern Munich and Vincent Kompany are weighing a move for Benfica defender Tomás Araújo as they plan defensive reinforcements for next season. Tz.de reports that the Bavarian club have monitored the 23-year-old for several weeks and have lodged an initial enquiry.

Araújo, Benfica’s number 44, is said to have impressed Bayern’s hierarchy. He is also comfortable at right-back, a versatility that appeals.

He is viewed as cover should Konrad Laimer, who has yet to renew and is contracted until 2027, or Hiroki Ito, hampered by injuries, depart.

Araújo has returned to training and could be available to José Mourinho for Monday 11 May against Braga.

He is regarded as one of Benfica’s main assets, tied to the club until 2029 with an 80 million euros release clause.

This season he has played 37 times, with 21 in Liga Portugal Betclic, nine in the Champions League, four in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in Liga Portugal Meu Super. Across 2,615 minutes he has one goal and one assist. He is valued at 28 million euros.
