Bayern Munich’s UEFA Champions League semi-final second leg defeat against Paris Saint-Germain was marred by questionable refereeing decisions.

Germany’s record champions felt as though they should have been awarded a penalty when PSG midfielder João Neves handled the ball in his own area, while referee João Pinheiro claimed to have seen Konrad Laimer handle the ball seconds before Nuno Mendes in an earlier incident, which would have seen the Portuguese left-back sent off for a second yellow.

“It is at least astonishing that a referee with only 15 Champions League appearances is allowed to officiate such a game, and that might explain some of the calls he made,” expressed CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen, who was critical of Pinheiro’s performance.
