Manchester United Women heartbreakingly exited the Champions League on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils made a strong start when Melvine Malard forced a good save from Ena Mahmutovic in the Bayern goal.
United were rewarded after 11 minutes when Jayde Riviere slid the ball behind the defence, and the keeper cleared the ball off Vanessa Gilles. Frenchwoman Malard was on hand to slot the ball home and give Marc Skinner’s side the perfect start.
Jess Park almost put United fans into dreamland when her cross had to be tipped onto the crossbar to deny the Reds going 2-0 up and 4-3 up in the tie. Bayern started to assert their dominance, and Gilles headed a chance just wide.
The Germans also appealed for a penalty when Maya Le Tissier appeared to bring down Carolin Simon, but their appeals were waved away.
The half-time whistle blew, and the Red Devils found themselves ahead.
Phallon Tullis-Joyce came to the rescue for the away side when she blocked Pernille Harder’s shot.
Millie Turner was the next to block Giulia Gwinn’s effort, as United were very much under pressure from the Bavarian attack.
Glódís Perla Viggósdóttir finally broke United hearts when she powerfully headed home a corner to restore Bayern’s lead in the tie with only 10 minutes of normal time remaining.
Linda Dallmann finally ended United’s brave resistance over two legs with a stunning strike into the top corner to put Bayern into the semi-finals.
United’s debut Champions League campaign came to an end in the last eight, but they will be very proud of an exciting first season in Europe.
With just three matches left in the Women’s Super League, they will be desperate to secure qualification again next season.
They will next be in action on 26th April against Tottenham Hotspur after the international break.
