Bayern Munich find themselves in an interesting situation regarding their long-term plans for signing a new defender.

Dayot Upamecano has a contract with Bayern until the end of the season, but he has yet to agree to a new deal with the club.

While the talks are still ongoing, no parties have found a long-term solution so far.

The curious case of Ibrahima Konate

Bayern have been checking on several defenders, in case Upamecano leaves the club.

In recent months, Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate has emerged as an option for Bayern, with the German giants already having contacted the defender’s representatives.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi is also another centre-back who is on their radar.

Konate, like Upamecano, has a contract at Anfield until the end of the season, and while he has been offered a new deal, so far there has been no positive development.

The Frenchman has hugely underperformed this season, and has come under strong criticism from fans and pundits, as Liverpool suffered a shock freefall from the lofty standards they set for themselves over the years.

He has been linked with a move to Real Madrid, but The Athletic report that Los Blancos have informed the Reds that they will not proceed with the potential transfer.

Put simply, a move to Real Madrid is off the table.

What Bayern plan to do now?

Bayern are maintaining all theor focus on securing a contract extension for Upamecano.

That’s their only priority. If the French defender signs a new deal with Bayern, they will not move for either Konate or Guehi.

Do Bayern need a defender? There were talks about signing a replacement for Kim Min-jae, but Bayern are happy with how he has gradually improved under Vincent Kompany.

Along with Jonathan Tah, Kompany can also use Josip Stanisic at centre-back. While the situation may change next summer, that’s the plan right now.

So, the possibility of signing Konate is not entirely off, but it hinges on many factors.
