Hiroki Ito is the latest name on a growing list of high-profile injuries to hamper Bayern Munich, especially in defence. How long might Manuel Neuer, Alphonso Davies and the rest be sidelined for?
bundesliga.com runs through Bayern’s current injury list…
The club captain and goalkeeper signed a new one-year contract at the start of February that will keep him at the Allianz Arena past his 40th birthday. He suffered a calf strain celebrating a goal in the 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie at the beginning of March. Youngster Jonas Urbig has deputised since then.
There had been hope that Neuer would be back following the international break, but he suffered a setback in his recovery. There is said to be a small hope that he could return for the Champions League quarter-final first leg against Inter Milan, which comes just days before Der Klassiker at home to Borussia Dortmund.
Davies also signed a contract extension at the start of February that is set to keep him in Munich to 2030, but he’ll play no further part in this season. The left-back led Canada out as captain in the Concacaf Nations League third-place play-off against the USA in March but came off after only 12 minutes.
Upon his return to Germany, the club determined he had torn his cruciate ligament. Injuries of that nature usually require at least six months of recovery. The 24-year-old, who has made 226 appearances for Bayern since his 2019 arrival, will therefore miss this summer’s FIFA Club World Cup in the USA and also the start of the 2025/26 campaign.
Upamecano’s consistent performances this season made him the first-choice centre-back for Vincent Kompany alongside Minjae Kim when both were fit, but he was also a victim of the March international break. The French defender scored the decisive spot-kick for his country to progress past Croatia on penalties in their UEFA Nations League quarter-final. That has set up a semi-final clash with Spain in Germany this June, but Upamecano is a doubt even for that.
Loose tissue was found in his knee, which required surgery that also discovered damaged cartilage. Reports suggest the 26-year-old could be out of action for three months. Sporting director Christoph Freund has suggested there is hope he could be back before the end of the season. However, any further involvement in Bayern’s push for the Bundesliga title is unlikely.
Days after the news of Davies and Upamecano’s injuries, Bayern then suffered another blow after Ito fractured his metatarsal in their win over St. Pauli on Matchday 27. “He had just fought his way back after a months-long rehabilitation and is now out again for a long time. You can only imagine what’s going through his head,” said board member for sport Max Eberl.
The Japan international defender only returned from a broken metatarsal in February, having first suffered the injury in a pre-season friendly shortly after his summer move from VfB Stuttgart. The 25-year-old would’ve been set for more playing time in the absence of Davies and Upamecano, given he can play at centre-back or left-back, but now he also faces several months on the sidelines again. It leaves Raphaël Guerreiro as the only natural left-sided defender available.
Bayern announced on the day of the St. Pauli game that Coman was absent due to an irritation in his left foot. The French winger had missed the previous two Bundesliga fixtures due to a knock and workload management. However, his issue is not set to be a long-term problem. “I hope I can see him training again next week and he can be part of the next game,” Kompany said after full-time, looking ahead to Friday’s derby at Augsburg.
Pavlović hasn’t featured for Bayern since February after being struck down by glandular fever. It’s an illness that can require some time out. For example, former Wolfsburg defender Marin Pongračić was sidelined for around four months.
The homegrown midfielder has since started strength training again, with Kompany insisting that they will take things one week at a time. “The main thing for me is that he gets time and isn’t under pressure. Once the doctors say he can be fully involved, then he’ll be back in our plans again,” the Belgian said at the end of March.
A 20-year-old centre-back, Buchmann is highly regarded at Bayern as a prospect for the future. However, his development has been seriously hampered by injuries. A torn muscle bundle in November 2023 kept him out for well over a year before returning to action for the reserves in early 2025.
But he then suffered another shoulder injury at the start of March and has undergone surgery. Buchmann could have been given a chance to make his senior debut and help plug the growing gaps in defence with injuries to senior players – plus allow Kim a break as he battles through the pain barrier because of a persistent Achilles issue – but he is now also out for the foreseeable future.
