Rory McIlroy is favourite for top award but faces strong competition from Lando Norris

The BBC Sports Personality of the Year for 2025 will be crowned tonight, with Rory McIlroy the favourite for victory.

The six nominees for this year’s prestigious individual prize are Lionesses duo Hannah Hampton and Chloe Kelly, England rugby star Ellie Kildunne, darts sensation Luke Littler, Masters champion Rory McIlroy and newly-crowned Formula One world champion Lando Norris.

Keely Hodgkinson won the award in 2024 after claiming gold in the 800m at the Paris Olympics and successfully defending her European title.

McIlroy is the favourite to win this year after he finally ended his long wait for a career Grand Slam with victory at Augusta in April, followed by helping Europe to Ryder Cup success on US soil.

Kelly and Hampton helped England win a second successive European Championship in the summer, while Kildunne was a key part of the Red Roses side who lifted the World Cup at home and Norris won the F1 world title last weekend in Abu Dhabi.

Back in January, Littler became the youngest player ever to win the World Darts Championship, aged just 17, before claiming a slew of other major titles.

Other prizes awarded tonight will include Young Sports Personality of the Year, Coach of the Year, Team of the Year, World Sport Star and the Helen Rollason Award, while Arsenal legend Thierry Henry will pick up the Lifetime Achievement award.
