Despite captain Becir Omeragic nearing a move, Montpellier can relaunch their promotion push when they host Le Mans on Saturday at 14:00 in Ligue 2’s 23rd round.

According to L'Équipe, the 24-year-old Swiss international, the captain with 18 months left, is set to leave, a sporting blow that cannot be offset with the window shut since 2 February. His exit had long felt likely, he wanted to go and was close to Kansas City this winter. The club plan to open their capital to investors and, without the Nicollin group’s regular support, finances would be fragile.

Relegated last spring and running one of the division’s biggest budgets, Montpellier do not want to linger in Ligue 2. Camara keeps stressing a rebuild that is not universally welcomed, while internal voices say the academy is being revived and the team are not far off.

Ligue 2 allows late runs. Even in 10th with 12 matches left and only one league win since early November, a 3-1 against Guingamp on 30 January, facing a Le Mans side unbeaten since September could help them close on a stuttering pack.

Otherwise the run-in could drag. Recent trips have switched to trains, scheduled flights and coaches, to Nice for a 2-3 Coupe de France loss on 4 February then to Saint-Étienne. At Saint-Étienne, Enzo Molebe, assigned number 14, came on wearing 33 after a kit-room misspelling, Mobele, posted then deleted by the club.

Match bonuses have also been reduced, and Le Mans travel by coach too.
