Belgian Pro League 2026/2027 Preview: KV Mechelen | OneFootball

KV Mechelen had a fantastic regular season last time out. The side finished in the top six for the first time and battled it out in the champions play offs. Sadly, they were unable to secure a European ticket. The team has since had a bit of a reshuffled, although head coach Fred Vanderbiest remains in charge. Pressure will be on for them to try and repeat the success of last season, but they may be more difficult given what they have lost or could lose this summer.

Transfers in: Cedric Van Meirvenne (Lierse), Dennis Praet (Antwerp), Kobe Corbaine (Antwerp)

Transfers out: Redouane Halhal (Venezia), Mathis Servais (Millwall), Mory Konate (Al-Hazem), Kerim Mrabti (free), Hassane Bande (free)

Key player: Fredrik Hammar

While Myron van Brederode claimed the headlines with his performances, Hammar was equally if not more important for KV Mechelen. Van Brederode may well leave, but Hammar should remain for another season. The Swedish midfielder, formerly of Brentford, is a highly competitive and combative central midfielder. He has provided a reliable replacement for Rob Schoofs, even if they are different types of players. He can help them wrestle control of a midfield and deal with physicality.

Young player to watch: Moncef Zekri

Another talented Moroccan player, Zekri played 20 games as a teenager last season. The 17-year-old is one of the few left-backs in the squad and should get plenty of game time. Even if someone else comes in to compete for the starting spot, Zekri showed he has plenty to offer already. Another decent season and the big clubs will be circling in the summer.
