Benfica have confirmed the signing of Brazilian centre-back Gabriel Índio on a contract running to 2031, and he could make his debut on Thursday against St. Gallen.

The 18-year-old has trained under Marco Silva throughout pre-season and featured in friendlies against Flamengo, Villarreal and Belenenses, impressing the coaching staff.

Completion of the deal was delayed until he turned 18 last Sunday, a required step to formalise the move under regulations for foreign minors.

Índio came through Flamengo and Botafogo before moving to Athletic Club, where he made four Série B appearances last season and also featured this year.

The transfer is valued at around four million euros. On a long-term agreement, Benfica are signalling faith in his potential as he attempts to establish himself in the senior squad.
