Gabriel Índio has begun training with Benfica after the club obtained special FIFA authorisation to integrate him before he turns 18, according to Glorioso 1904.

The Brazilian defender turns 18 on 26 July, so he cannot feature in the Europa League second qualifying round against St.Gallen.

International rules generally prohibit cross-border transfers of under-18 players, with only very specific exceptions. As his case did not fit those categories, clearance from the relevant bodies was required to enable this interim step.

After approvals from FIFA and Athletic-MG, Gabriel Índio travelled to Portugal to begin his adaptation at Seixal.

He will now get to know Benfica’s methods, settle gradually into his new surroundings, and prepare for the transfer to be formalised next month.
