Benfica have signed Nigeria forward Janet Akekoromowei, 18, on a contract to 2028 with two further years as options. She was named MVP in the penultimate Nigerian league season.

According to Glorioso 1904, Barcelona had been close to securing her before a serious injury on Nigeria duty in February halted those plans as she prepared to move to Europe.

Her European switch is now complete, with Benfica adding one of Nigeria’s most highly rated young talents to their attack. She can feature for the first team or the B side.

The former Bayelsa Queens forward is set for her first spell outside her home country.

At Bayelsa Queens she played alongside Shakirat Moshood, who joins Torreense for the new season, and the pair were also youth internationals together. Akekoromowei now begins a new chapter and has the chance to prove her potential in Benfica colours.
