Benfica has asked the Disciplinary Council of the Portuguese Football Federation to clarify potential sporting consequences for FC Porto SAD following January’s Supreme Court of Justice ruling in the emails case, the club said in a statement.

The court found that accusations drawn from illicitly obtained and manipulated private communications were false and entirely unfounded. The episode also caused serious reputational damage to national competitions and directly conditioned sporting participants.

FC Porto SAD, Porto Canal and the club’s then communications director, Francisco J. Marques, were convicted on 16 January by the Supreme Court of Justice. Porto were ordered to pay €605,000 in damages, and Marques received a suspended sentence for violation of correspondence and offence against a legal person.

The judgment has become final, with no possibility of appeal.

The disciplinary council opened a case on the matter in late 2017, with no progress for more than eight and a half years.

In that context, Benfica is urging the council to set out, unequivocally and without delay, any consequences and sporting sanctions to be applied to FC Porto SAD.
