According to Glorioso 1904, Benfica full-back Lúcia Alves was named Women’s Footballer of the Year at the 2026 Cosme Damião awards, and she highlighted her admiration for Simão Sabrosa, who presented the trophy.

The Paredes-born defender recalled watching Benfica matches at the local Casa do Benfica as a child, celebrating many of Simão’s goals.

She said those moments helped inspire her ambition to wear the Benfica shirt. Alves added that she now lives that dream with pride.

Recently, Alves scored a superb goal for Portugal in a 2-0 win over Finland in the opening round of 2027 World Cup qualifying at Estádio Municipal de Vizela. Carolina Santiago netted the other.

Since joining Benfica, she has made 190 appearances, scoring 23 and providing 36 assists. Her honours total 14 trophies, including five league titles, making her one of the club’s most decorated players.
