Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta has provided an update on the club’s pursuit of João Cancelo, confirming that while the opportunity has presented itself, negotiations are still in the early stages. Speaking to DAZN ahead of Inter’s clash with Bologna, as relayed by Alfredo Pedullà, Marotta detailed the club’s current transfer strategy.
Notably, the need for a wing-back has been accelerated by injuries within the squad. Marotta explained the situation regarding the Portuguese defender:
“We don’t have great needs, especially in this market which offers few opportunities. We have a problem with Dumfries’ recovery, he will be out for a couple of months more and we’ll see if the market offers opportunities. The Cancelo opportunity presented itself, we are looking into it and we will see what happens, it is an interim phase.”
Indeed, the Nerazzurri are also managing potential outgoings, specifically concerning Davide Frattesi, who has been linked with a move to Turkey. Marotta clarified the club’s stance on player departures:
“For Frattesi, our strategy is that if a player wants to leave, we discuss it and evaluate. Frattesi is not in this condition. We have not received official proposals but we are open to discussions.”
Furthermore, the CEO touched upon the future of Kristjan Asllani, currently on loan at Torino, noting that the club must “seek to respect the value of the player” and find the best solution if conditions at Torino change. Consequently, Inter remain vigilant but cautious as they navigate a winter window defined by specific tactical needs rather than a total overhaul.
