Real Madrid and Manchester City have formally announced Bernardo Silva’s pending arrival at the Bernabeu from the start of the 2026/27 season.
The 31-year-old calls time on an illustrious, trophy-laden nine-year stay at the Etihad Stadium, now linking up with compatriot José Mourinho in Spanish football to inject experience and composure into the Bernabeu midfield.
Bernardo Silva departs English football as a Manchester City legend, having served as a key pillar during the club’s most dominant era under Pep Guardiola.
Over the course of 460 appearances in sky blue, the Portuguese international scored 76 goals and contributed to an astonishing 20 major honours, including six Premier League titles, five Carabao Cups, three FA Cups, and a UEFA Champions League crown.
In a poetic final act as club captain during the 2025/26 campaign, the veteran midfielder skippered Manchester City to a domestic cup double, hoisting the Carabao Cup over Arsenal and the FA Cup against Chelsea at Wembley.
Now, following official confirmation from both Real Madrid and Manchester City, Bernardo Silva will join Los Blancos on a two-year contract when his Etihad Stadium agreement expires at the end of June.
Who could replace Bernardo Silva at Manchester City?
Bernardo Silva joins Real Madrid having faced Los Blancos 13 times during his time at Manchester City, scoring four times in the process including a memorable double en route to winning the UEFA Champions League in the 2022/23 season’s second leg win.
Hugo Viana – Manchester City’s sporting director – is known to be in the market for midfield reinforcement this summer, and is understood to have identified Elliot Anderson as his No.1 priority in the position.
Officials at the Etihad Stadium have already seen two bids rejected by Evangelos Marinakis and Nottingham Forest, with the most recent believed to be worth an initial £106 million plus a further £15 million in add-ons.
Those at the City Ground are targeting a new British record transfer fee for the England international, in a deal that could make the former Newcastle United starlet the third-most expensive footballer of all-time.
Beyond Anderson, any further signings in the centre of the park could depend on outgoings from the squad, with doubts continue to linger over the futures of Tijjani Reijnders, Nico Gonzalez, and Mateo Kovacic.
