This rivalry has hosted some fierce encounters over the years, none more than in their last encounter against each other back in 2019, when tensions boiled over as boyhood Villa fan Jack Grealish was punched to the ground by a Blues fan before netting a memorable winner.

On a positive note, down the years, it has been a fixture that has given fans enthralling encounters with plenty of big-name players making their mark in the fixture. Despite not coming up against each other for over six years after Aston Villa's promotion to the top-flight, comparisons are still made between the two clubs.

Speaking to Football League World, Birmingham City's fan pundit, Jason Moore, believes that there are two key areas where the Blues are better than the Villans.

Birmingham City's ownership has led to two claims where they have bettered Aston Villa

Since Birmingham City's takeover in 2023 by Shelby Companies Limited, the Blues have had a sudden rise which saw them break the League One points tally last season and look to cement themselves in the second tier in their first season back.

FLW's Birmingham City fan pundit, Jason, believes that the takeover and arrival of Tom Wagner has led to two key areas where the club have bettered their rivals in recent years.

Jason said: "There's probably two things now, and they're quite recent, and they are because of this ownership.

"How we make money is 100% one of the ways we are better than Villa.

"Granted, they are in the Premier League, and they naturally have a bigger revenue than us, but I think once we're there, we're going to be a serious club that makes money, and the revenue that the owners are able to bring in, through their contacts, has just been ridiculous for a club that was in League One, and a club that's doing bang average in the Championship now.

"I think the way they run it as a business is really, really impressive to be honest. Even all the little things like them being able to pay the club off social media impressions and finding loopholes within the rules is pretty impressive."

Birmingham City praised for their charitable work within the community

Jason also thinks that it's not just what goes on within 90 minutes that makes a difference and instead about what happens either side of the whistle. He has placed emphasis on the fact that the club should be given the recognition they deserve for the work they put in with the local community to bring the city of Birmingham together. He believes it is another area in which they top their rivals.

Jason said: "I think the more charitable side of the game we do better than Villa.

"Like the BCFC Foundation, especially the importance the owners and the new hierarchy have put on it. It's just been brilliant and how much they interact with the community because of it and help the less fortunate is just great.

"We did it prior to them anyway, and we've always been a club that comes together, but these new guys coming in, they've just put such an emphasis on it, and it's been really nice to see to be fair.

"It makes the club come together and fans that wouldn't normally talk to each other come together because it's a community at a football club. It's been brilliant to be fair. So, yeah, I would say that those are the two things that come to mind straight away."
