Birmingham City are closing in on the signing of Ben Davies from Rangers after agreeing a £750,000 fee for the defender.
Birmingham City are closing in on the signing of Ben Davies from Rangers on a permanent basis after they had a £750,000 offer for the defender accepted.
The 29-year-old joined Blues on a season-long loan from the Glasgow outfit in the previous campaign, and he played 35 times for Chris Davies’ side as they won the League One title, breaking the EFL points record in the process.
Therefore, it’s perhaps no surprise that the Blues chief is keen on reuniting with Davies, and there has been plenty of talk about a potential deal.
And, it appears the Championship side have now made a breakthrough, as Football Insider has revealed that the two clubs have come to an agreement over a fee of £750,000.
They claim that the next step will be for Davies to undergo a medical, and that is expected to happen once he has recovered from a ‘minor’ injury that has prevented the ex-Preston man from featuring in pre-season so far.
Rangers have already beefed up their options at the back, with Nasser Djiga and Emmanuel Fernandez among the arrivals for Russell Martin, and with Davies entering the final year of his contract at Ibrox, a summer departure always seemed likely.
It has been a remarkable transfer window for Blues so far, with the club making some statement signings on their return to the Championship.
They have added numbers in defence, with Phil Neumann arriving on a free transfer, and Eiran Cashin has joined from Brighton on a season-long loan. The duo look like shrewd captures for Blues, and they will be competing with Christoph Klarer for a place in the XI.
With Davies added to the mix, Birmingham will have four reliable options in central defence, and that will appeal to the manager, who recognises the need for squad depth over the course of a season.
Like Cashin, Davies is a left-footer, so it’s clear Davies wants players with that profile to help balance the team, and he obviously knows exactly what the Rangers man is all about, as he was a key figure in the side last season.
