The former Spurs coach was handed his first managerial role by Blues last year, and the team enjoyed a remarkable first year under his guidance, as they won the League One title, breaking the EFL points record in the process.

Given the level of investment that has gone into Blues since their ambitious US owners took over, there was a feeling among many observers that they could push for promotion once again.

Yet, the first few months of the current campaign have been tough, with Blues in mid-table after a hard-fought 1-0 success at Deepdale.

That victory came after a run of four games without a win, so the pressure had been building on Davies, particularly as Blues’ performances have been underwhelming.

And, in a fresh development, Football Insider has claimed that there are still doubts over Davies’ future at St. Andrew’s.

They state that the hierarchy remain ‘disappointed’ at Blues’ position at the moment, and the next few weeks leading up to the November international break are said to be ‘critical’ for the boss and his long-term future.

Birmingham face a tough trip at Bristol City this weekend before home fixtures against Portsmouth and Millwall leading into the break.

Birmingham City will hope Preston victory can trigger an upturn in form

This is a surprising update, particularly after the win at Deepdale, and there’s no denying it would be harsh to sack Davies in the coming weeks.

It’s worth remembering that there was a high turnover of players in the summer, so it was always going to take time for the group to develop an understanding.

Nevertheless, with the funding that the owners have put into Birmingham over the past 18 months, you can understand why they are demanding instant results, and they are right to think that this team is capable of better.

So, it will be intriguing to see how this plays out, and the next three games are seemingly massive for Davies as he tries to show he can deliver another promotion.

But, the manner of the win at Preston will give the players plenty of confidence, as whilst Blues weren’t at their free-flowing best, they showed real spirit and battling qualities, and they will now try to build on that and create momentum by picking up another three points at Ashton Gate.
