Sheffield United kept their hopes of securing automatic promotion alive with a 2-0 win over Cardiff City, a result that further deepens the Bluebirds' relegation worries.
Gustavo Hamer opened the scoring in the first half with a sharp finish, reacting quickest after Tyrese Campbell’s shot was deflected into his path. The midfielder, a strong candidate for Championship player of the season, made no mistake from close range.
Hamer almost added a second before the break, rattling the post with a well-struck free-kick, as the Blades created the better chances in a nervy encounter.
Cardiff showed determination but lacked cutting edge in the final third and struggled to break down United’s defence. Their hopes of rescuing a point were dashed late on when Ben Brereton Diaz converted from close range to seal the result.
The win ends a run of three straight defeats for United, which had seen them slip behind promotion rivals Burnley and Leeds United.
With three games left in the season, the Blades sit third in the standings, two points behind Leeds—who face Oxford United later on Saturday—and five off the pace set by league leaders Burnley.
While Sheffield United chase a return to the Premier League, Cardiff are staring down the opposite scenario. They've managed just one victory in their last nine matches, leaving them in serious danger of relegation.
Following Luton Town’s win at Derby County, the Welsh club now sit 23rd in the table. However, they remain just a single point away from climbing out of the drop zone.
