This Sunday at midday, the spotlight falls on Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday as the Steel City derby returns, a fixture that doesn’t need added narrative.
For the Blades, it is an opportunity to drive home supremacy. For the Owls, it may be about survival, in more ways than one.
United go into the clash knowing that victory would complete a league double over Wednesday for the second consecutive season. In a rivalry where bragging rights are treasured currency, doing the double once is special. Doing it twice in a row begins to establish a pattern of dominance.
Recent years have been all red and white. From league position to performances in head-to-head encounters, the Blades have largely held the upper hand. The Blades won 1-0 home and away last term, whilst thrashing Wednesday 3-0 at Hillsborough earlier this season. Another victory on Sunday would only reinforce that narrative, that, right now, the power balance in Sheffield lies firmly on the red half of the city, as it has done for the vast majority of the 21st century.
The Owls currently sit on -7 points, a staggering position at this stage of the campaign. The deduction has left them staring at the possibility of unwanted history. Should their form continue, they risk breaking a record that has stood for well over a century.
Back in the 1889/90 season, Loughborough FC recorded the lowest-ever points tally in the second division, finishing with just eight points. For Wednesday supporters, the prospect is grim. For United, the derby is a chance to push their rivals one step closer to that horror points record.

While much of the build-up will focus on Wednesday’s terrible predicament, United have their own ambitions driving them forward. A win on Sunday could potentially move the Blades to within three points of the play-off places, depending on results elsewhere across the weekend.
In a division as tight as this one, that margin can evaporate quickly. Three points in a derby do more than boost the league table; they inject belief and energise a fanbase heading into the business end of the season.
Should United complete another double, it would further underline a period of sustained superiority in Sheffield, and it would mark the first consecutive double in the Steel City derby for either side since the 1933/34 and 1937/38 seasons.
