Boitumelo Radiopane returns after injury and Ouaddou gives some statements about the player's condition!
Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou has explained the factors behind striker Boitumelo Radiopane’s gradual return to regular action after featuring prominently earlier in the season. The coach shed light on the situation following Pirates’ victory in the Carling Cup over the weekend.
Radiopane made an impact off the bench by scoring the second goal in the Buccaneers’ 2–0 triumph over the Carling All Stars at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. The 23-year-old found the net with just 10 minutes left in the exhibition encounter, sealing the win for his side.
Before suffering an injury setback, Radiopane had appeared four times across all competitions this season. His return comes at a time when Pirates continue to enjoy success, with Sifiso Luthuli scoring the opening goal as the club became the first reigning Carling Knockout champions to lift the Carling Cup since the tournament was introduced in 2023.
Speaking after the match, Ouaddou discussed Radiopane’s journey back into contention and outlined what he expects from his forwards.
“Radio is one young player among many others that have been doing well,” he told journalists.
The Pirates coach highlighted that Radiopane was initially a key part of his plans, particularly after an impressive pre-season tour.
“He had fantastic preparations [pre-season] in Spain. You would remember we started him at the beginning of the season.”
However, Ouaddou explained that injuries disrupted the striker’s momentum, forcing the technical team to manage his workload carefully.
“Afterwards, he had some injury problems. We had to protect him. We gave a chance to another striker who’s scoring. It’s difficult to change,” he added.
Ouaddou also emphasized that his selection decisions are based on tactical considerations and the demands of specific opponents. According to him, a striker’s role extends beyond simply scoring goals.
“I have said that we are putting strikers regarding the profile of the opponents we are going to play. I have said that in the game model, from my striker, I need more than a goal.”
While acknowledging the importance of finding the back of the net, the coach stressed the need for forwards to contribute defensively as well.
“Of course, a goal is more than important, but in the competencies of the striker, I am looking for more. Scoring, but I need you to be very efficient without the ball as well. It means when we don’t have the ball, you need to work as well.”
For Ouaddou, Radiopane’s reintegration into the squad is part of a broader philosophy that values effort, balance, and adaptability alongside attacking output.
