Miguelito started as Bolivia lost 2-1 to Iraq at Estadio BBVA in Guardalupe, Mexico, in the early hours of Wednesday 1. According to Diario Do Peixe, the result ended La Verde’s bid for a World Cup place, which went to Iran.
Santos team-mates Marcelo Contreras, from the under-20s, and Enzo Monteiro, on loan in South Korea, were also with Bolivia during this FIFA window. Contreras stayed on the bench and Monteiro came on in the 45th minute of the second half. The trio had featured in the previous game.
On Thursday 26, Bolivia beat Suriname 2-1 at the same venue. Miguelito also started, was booked, and converted a penalty for the comeback goal. Monteiro began that match but went off at 29 minutes of the second half, while Contreras was unused.
The trio now return to club duty. Miguelito will still miss Santos against Remo on Thursday 2 at 19:00 at Vila Belmiro, in round nine of the Brasileirão, but should be available for the next match against Flamengo.
Contreras is also absent for the under-20s against Athletico-PR on Wednesday 1 at 15:00 at CAT do Caju, in round four of the Brasileiro Sub-20. Santos will discuss renewals for Miguelito and Marcelo, whose deals run until 24 April and June next year respectively. Monteiro will travel back to South Korea.
