Mason Burstow has spent the first half of the season on loan at Bolton Wanderers

Sergej Jakirovic has confirmed that Hull City have no plans to recall Mason Burstow from Bolton Wanderers in the January window in what will represent a considerable boost to the League One promotion hopefuls as they contend for a return to the Championship.

The forward made the temporary switch to the League One side in the summer after struggling for consistent minutes in his first season with the Tigers.

The 22-year-old joined the Yorkshire outfit in 2024 from Chelsea, having spent the previous season at Sunderland, and made 31 Championship appearances last season, but only eight of those came as starts.

He contributed two goals and one assist for Hull as the team survived relegation to League One with a 21st place finish.

Burstow has enjoyed a strong run of form since moving to Bolton, scoring seven times from 17 games in the third tier under Steven Schumacher.

Jakirovic has cited Hull’s abundance of forward options as to why the club have no plans to bring Burstow back from Bolton in the upcoming January window, despite his strong goal scoring form.

He believes remaining with the Whites will be good for the player as he is gaining confidence and finding the back of the net on a regular basis, so bringing him back to the Championship side without any use for him would be a waste.

When asked about any plans to recall Burstow, Jakirovic said, via Hull Live."Right now, no, because we have three strikers.

"I think it's good for him because he has rhythm there, he's scoring the goals, confidence is very big, very high, and I'm very happy for him because he is satisfied.

"If you stay here, you don't have minutes, then you will be disappointed, and that will be frustrating for him, so it's better like this, and then we will see in the summer what will happen."

Oli McBurnie, Joe Gelhardt and Kyle Joseph have all played minutes up front for the Tigers this season, with the former two performing exceptionally well in the current campaign to ignite hopes of a shock play-off charge at the MKM Stadium.

However, an injury to McBurnie and some poor form from Joseph of late has led to some speculation that Burstow could be in line for a return to Hull in the winter.

There has also been some uncertainty over Gelhardt’s future, as he could too be recalled in the new year from his parent club, Leeds United, but reports are now suggesting this is not on the cards.

Bolton are competing for promotion to the Championship, sitting sixth in the table, while Hull are eighth in the second division.

Mason Burstow development is huge for Bolton Wanderers - Steven Schumacher will love it

Bolton would’ve been quite concerned at the prospect of losing Burstow in January, especially as the same could also happen to Amario Cozier-Duberry.

The pair have been so important to Schumacher's side so far this season, and will be needed if they are to earn promotion to the Championship this season.

It also makes sense for Hull to keep the forward in League One for now, as he is enjoying a strong campaign and that will massively aid his development as a player.

If he went back to Hull, then there’s every chance he’d be on the bench most weeks and struggling for minutes, so it’s best for all parties that Burstow finishes the season at Bolton.

Burstow's long-term future remains up in the air, as a prolific spell at Bolton could either see him re-enter the Tigers' first-team fold or be cashed in on off the back of good goalscoring form, with the Trotters perhaps likely to have their sights set on a permanent switch next summer.
