Boniface’s Werder Bremen future is in doubt as knee surgery is being considered, a move that could end his season.

Bild claims that medical staff in Leverkusen believe an operation may now be the best option, with the possibility first discussed in August before the striker chose against it.

Undergoing the procedure now would likely rule him out for the rest of the campaign, so he may not play again for Werder after arriving on loan late in the summer window.

While a setback in the short term, surgery could resolve a persistent issue and protect the Nigerian’s long-term prospects.

Talks were expected before Christmas, with Bayer Leverkusen sporting director Simon Rolfes and Werder’s head of professional football Clemens Fritz said to favour a joint approach.

The final decision rests with Boniface, who has yet to score in 11 appearances for Die Grün-Weißen after netting 22 across two Bundesliga seasons with Die Werkself between 2023 and 2025. He is expected to return to Leverkusen by the summer of 2026.
