Borussia Dortmund are reportedly interested Croatian midfield duo

With the winter transfer window just about a month away, speculation regarding the moves clubs are going to make and the players that will be the subject of these moves have begun in earnest. For Borussia Dortmund, the links have pointed towards interesting midfield reinforcements.

Multiple reports have already stated that Dortmund has an interest in Sučić, and this makes a ton of sense. The talented defensive midfielder has been one of the pillars upon which Dinamo Zagreb has built its Champions League run. Dortmund, on their end, are still in need of strong options in defensive midfield, particularly due to the inconsistent form of club captain Emre Can.

Baturina, who is also extremely talented, is an attacking midfielder. Dortmund has already been linked with Sunderland’s Jobe Bellingham, which may signal the club would like to make some changes in this position as well.

Both players are extremely exciting prospects for Dortmund to consider. Of course, as with many talents of their ilk, there are reportedly quite a few clubs already interested.

Sučić would be the priority player for the club to sign as the need for a defensive midfielder supersedes the need for an attacking midfielder, especially while Gio Reyna is still at the club. In a recent interview, Lars Ricken admitted to having discussed Sučić with Dinamo’s Sporting Director Marko Marić, who highlighted Sučić as the club’s most talented player:

"I had a talk with Marko Marić from Dinamo Zagreb, the sporting director, and he told me they think Sučić is their greatest player. Unfortunately, he was injured [when Dortmund played Zagreb]…We have a very good scouting department and we are following top talented players all over the world. I can't say now whether we are interested in this player or that player…. We talked about the team of Zagreb and because of their business model, they have a lot of great players already playing in the national team from a very young age. They have very interesting players."- Lars Ricken

With Dortmund’s interest firmly set on observing Dinamo’s two jewels, there’s a good chance that the club will be planning for substantial upheaval should the opportunity present itself, and should sales be made to accommodate for their introduction. It’s certainly very heartening to hear that transfer efforts will continue to reach beyond the confines of the Bundesliga, as a more diverse pool of talent will be more likely to lead to the discovery of the next star in black and yellow.
