Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund are mulling a move to sign Chelsea centre-back/full-back Josh Acheampong following his breakout campaign (h/t the Independent).
The Blues were previously opposed to letting him leave, even on loan. However, per the report, suitors believe ‘Chelsea may be willing to do business for £35 million’.
Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca gave Acheampong his shot in the first team, and the youngster grabbed it with both hands.
He has impressed at right-back, centre-back, and even left-back when needed.
Acheampong is brave on the ball, and his penchant to play and drive forward has excited the Stamford Bridge faithful. He remains composed when he steps into midfield.
He is set to sign a new deal. Maresca said he was in love with Acheampong after he produced an assured performance in the 3-0 win over Legia Warsaw.
The Italian said, ‘Potentially, he can be a fantastic player, a top player for this club and football in general’.
Unfortunately, Chelsea’s excessive expenditure on their youth project has seen them pawn off some bright academy graduates.
Lewis Hall, Conor Gallagher, and Mason Mount have been sold to balance the books.
The West London club has been trying to ship solid defender Trevoh Chalobah for ‘pure profit’ amid pressure from the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
Chelsea might have the same plan for Acheampong. However, they risk drawing the ire of fans by selling off another talented product to finance their scattergun project.
Acheampong was one of the bright spots of the 2024/25 season. He drives the ball purposefully, better than the other full-backs on the books.
Physically, he looks ready for senior men’s football.
The 19-year-old looks primed to have a bigger role in the team next season, on top of the 12 games he played for the first team this term.
There might be more openings for him to impress as Chelsea continue to manage injury-prone captain Reece James and Malo Gusto grapples with poor form.
Also, if Chelsea do not sign a left-back to back-up Marc Cucurella, he has shown he can hold his own in the unfamiliar position.
Fans will be looking forward to watching one of their own bombing down the flanks.
