On Tuesday evening, Borussia Dortmund suffered their fourth straight defeat of the new year, as Serie A side Bologna comfortably shrugged off Die Schwarzgelben to record a 2-1 victory in the Champions League.
Prior to kick-off, there was significant pressure on head coach Nuri Şahin to turn Dortmund’s fortunes around, with his future at the club in serious doubt.
However, despite taking a 1-0 lead early in the first half, BvB failed to impose themselves on Bologna for the remainder of the bout.
While the Italian outfit would make turning over the deficit far harder work than it needed to be, two goals in quick succession after the interval ensured they earned all three points against Şahin’s side.
But in truth, it could have been far worse for Dortmund, who for the majority of the match appeared no better than a Sunday league side.
Speaking to Prime Video after the final whistle, Dortmund’s director of sport, Lars Ricken, offered his views on the clash as well as Şahin’s future (via Florian Plettenberg):
“Nuri was very brave in the lineup. Very offensive. We are annoyed. We must be able to win 1-0, even if it is tasteless. It is not an undeserved defeat.”
“We haven’t won the last four games. Nuri has my backing. But my statements (before the game) stand. You won’t hear any decision from me here in Italy. We’ll discuss it tomorrow. We want the best for Borussia Dortmund.”
With those in charge at the Westfalenstadion ready to discuss Şahin’s future later today, the 36-year-old could have managed his final game for BvB.
Reports have linked Erik Ten Hag, Roger Schmidt, and Sebastian Hoeneß to the club in recent days, but Dortmund could also look to make a short-term appointment before making a decision on the direction they want the club to go in during the summer.
