Borussia Dortmund head into their Bundesliga season opener against St. Pauli on Saturday with a squad hampered by several key injuries.
The clash takes place at St. Pauli’s Millerntor-Stadion in Hamburg. After finishing fourth in last season’s Bundesliga, Dortmund will be eager to start their campaign strongly under the watchful eye of coach Niko Kovač.
Dortmund face defensive worries heading into the match as several key defenders are sidelined. Niklas Süle is out for approximately two months due to a calf injury sustained during pre-season against Juventus.
Nico Schlotterbeck remains sidelined with a meniscus injury, while Emre Can is also out with an adductor issue.
The recent injury to Yan Couto in the DFB Pokal match on August 18th, which saw him stretchered off following a heavy tackle, adds to Dortmund’s defensive concerns. Club director Sebastian Kehl has hinted that Dortmund may enter the transfer market if Couto’s recovery is prolonged.
Julien Duranville, the 19-year-old Belgian winger, underwent shoulder surgery following an injury sustained against Real Madrid at the FIFA Club World Cup in July. The club confirmed the operation with no precise timeline for his return, though reports suggest he could be out for several months.
Dortmund predicted XI: Kobel; Mane, Anton, Bensebaini; Ryerson, Gross, Sabitzer, Bellingham, Svensson; Guirassy, Adeyemi
