Scenario: Third against fourth. Only one point separates the two teams. Leverkusen are in a Champions League spot for the first time this season and are also ahead of the Black & Yellows for the first time.
Home & away: Leverkusen have celebrated three consecutive home wins, keeping a clean sheet in each game (2-0 against Union, 2-0 against Freiburg, 6-0 against Heidenheim). Despite conceding late goals in Hamburg against FC St. Pauli (final score 3-3) and most recently against HSV (1-1), Dortmund are the third-best away team of the season after Hoffenheim (14) and Munich (13), with 11 points from six away games.
Head-to-head: Borussia Dortmund alone took four points (one win, one draw) from the BayArena in Leverkusen’s championship-winning and subsequent runner-up season. The Werkself have not won against the Black & Yellows in four home games, picking up just one point from those four matches. In the Bundesliga, Bayer have only suffered more defeats (52) and conceded more goals (174) against Bayern than against BVB (37 and 153 respectively). In their Bundesliga history, Borussia have won more games after falling behind 1-0 away to Bayer Leverkusen than they have at any other club (five times, most recently last season) and have picked up points a total of 11 times after Leverkusen have opened the scoring.
Statistics: BVB have lost only one of their last 19 Bundesliga games (13 wins, five draws). In the last two games, however, the Black & Yellows had to settle for a draw after conceding goals in injury time – this is the first time they have gone three straight league games without a win since Niko Kovac took charge. Since Kasper Hjulmand took over the Werkself before Matchday 3, only Bayern Munich have picked up more points, celebrated more wins and scored more goals than Bayer Leverkusen. No other coach in Bayer’s long history has won a higher percentage of his Bundesliga games in charge as Hjulmand (seven out of nine, or 78%).
Facts: Bayer Leverkusen have won an impressive 54% of tackles on the pitch this season, making them the strongest team in the Bundesliga in terms of tackling. In Loic Bade, the Werkself also have the best individual player in terms of tackling success: the 25-year-old Frenchman won just over 71% of his challenges.
Last season: An outstanding Gregor Kobel in goal, a bit of luck with a shot that hit the crossbar and efficiency in front of goal gave Borussia Dortmund a flattering half-time lead: After Jeremy Frimpong made it 1-0 for Bayer in the 31st minute, Julian Brandt (33) and Julian Ryerson (45) put BVB 2-1 ahead, despite Leverkusen having 15 shots on goal to BVB's four in the first half. After the break, BVB managed to make the game more balanced and struck again with clinical precision: Karim Adeyemi (73) and Serhou Guirassy (76) took advantage of chances three and four to make it 3-1 and 4-1. Jonas Hofmann pulled one back late on for Leverkusen to make it 4-2.
Biggest away win: Only three of the 13 Bundesliga away wins in Leverkusen have been by more than one goal. The 3-1 win on Matchday 18 of the 2010/2011 season – a milestone on the way to the title – was followed by a 4-2 win at the BayArena on 29 September 2018. After trailing 2-0 at half-time, Jacob Bruun Larsen (65), Marco Reus (6’) and Paco Alcácer (85’/90’) turned the game around with goals in the second half.Compiled by Boris Rupert
