Joao Gomes Transfer Race Gives Liverpool a Clear Opening

Liverpool have a realistic shot at beating Manchester United to Joao Gomes this summer, and the reason is straightforward. The player has already made his position clear, and the club can offer what matters most.

Back in 2022, Gomes said: “Liverpool are a team I’d play for. I have the greatest desire to play”. He also added: “Playing in the Champions League is my biggest dream in football”. Those comments matter. Players change. Circumstances change. Preferences can shift. But when a midfielder of his profile has already pointed directly at Liverpool, it is worth paying attention.

Atletico Madrid looked like a possible destination for the Wolves midfielder, but that route has cooled after their move for Morten Hjulmand. That leaves the door open, and Liverpool should be looking at it seriously.

Liverpool can offer Joao Gomes Champions League football

This is where the equation becomes simple. If Joao Gomes wants Champions League football, Liverpool can provide it. That gives them an obvious advantage in any battle for the Brazilian midfielder, especially against a Manchester United side still trying to rebuild its credibility.

He is 25, Premier League-tested, aggressive in the challenge and comfortable doing the ugly work in midfield. Liverpool need that. The squad has lacked control and protection in the middle of the pitch, and that weakness repeatedly left the back line exposed last season.

Midfield rebuild remains urgent at Anfield

Liverpool’s need for a proper holding midfielder has been obvious for some time. The issue survived one managerial era and became even clearer during the collapse that ended with Arne Slot’s departure on 30 May 2026. Andoni Iraola has now taken over, and his football requires intensity, structure and midfield legs. Joao Gomes fits that brief.

This is not complicated scouting. He covers ground, competes, presses and brings edge. Liverpool do not need midfield decoration. They need functionality. Gomes offers that, and he already knows the demands of English football through his time at Wolves.

Manchester United face a harder sell

United may still push, particularly with their own need for midfield reinforcement. They can offer minutes and status. What they cannot offer, at least right now, is the same level of certainty.

Liverpool underperformed badly last season, but the ceiling remains higher. The squad is stronger, the route back to contention is shorter and the pull of Anfield remains obvious. If Iraola gets the midfield right and restores the aggressive, press-heavy identity that has been missing, Liverpool can move quickly.

For Joao Gomes, the choice may come down to project, platform and ambition. On all three counts, Liverpool currently look the cleaner fit.

The midfielder’s own past words may yet prove decisive.
