NJ/NY Gotham FC will begin the 2026 NWSL season this weekend when the team plays against one of the newest teams in the league, Boston Legacy FC. This will start the campaign to not only defend the 2025 NWSL Championship, but also rebound from a not-so-great regular season as per the standards set by the club and what fans expect.
At the same time, the Bats have had slow starts in previous seasons. Hence, when Gotham FC plays their first games, it is possible that results will not go the way they should on paper. It is vital, though, that the ladies find themselves quickly, for they do not want to be in a tough spot after the first month of play.
At a minimum, especially with three home fixtures, the NJ/NY side should go 2-1-1 to start the year. So, here is a look at the March 2026 schedule for Gotham FC.
Gotham FC will open the NWSL season on the road against one of the two new teams in the league. As mentioned, the NJ/NY side will take on Boston Legacy FC. This game will be a little unknown in what direction it will go, since this will be Boston's inaugural match. There will be a few familiar faces from last year's Gotham team, for Ella Stevens and Josefine Hasbo are both with the new squad. It will be a nice reunion, but the Bats will want to rain on the new side's opening game and start the year with all three points.
After starting the season on the road, the ladies will return home for a three-game homestand, starting with a match against the North Carolina Courage. Since this will be the home opener, the team will want to win in front of the supporters. More importantly, after winning just four of 13 fixtures at home in 2025, it is vital that the team wins more this season. Hence, Gotham will not want to start the year with anything less than a win. But the Courage is never an easy team to face, and fans will recall the team beat the Bats in the final match of the previous regular season. Everyone should expect a hard-fought home opener.
Gotham is not done playing against the new teams, for the ladies will welcome Denver Summit FC to Sports Illustrated Stadium for a midweek battle. Like Boston, it is difficult to know what the team will be like. Nevertheless, the Bats must be prepared and ready to earn all three points. They do not want a new team to come to New Jersey and earn any points. Oh, and for fans who are also fans of New York City FC, this will be an interesting day since the Pigeons' former head coach, Nick Cushing, is now the head coach of Denver.
The final match of the homestand, and in March, will be against the Orlando Pride. The Florida side won at Sports Illustrated Stadium last year, while the Bats won both games in Florida during the regular season and playoffs. Supporters should assume that the Pride will seek revenge, and with players like Barbra Banda, Marta, and Jacqueline Ovalle, this will be the most challenging battle of the early part of the season. Gotham FC will have to be at their best defensively if they want to win their third match in a row against the Pride.
