Manchester United have taken the first firm step into a defining summer by agreeing a deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha. Subject to visa and registration formalities, Cunha will become one of the first additions in what is expected to be a period of sweeping change at Old Trafford.
As Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS aim to instil structure and discipline into a club long searching for a consistent identity, Cunha’s signing feels measured and intentional. The 26-year-old is experienced, versatile, and proven in top European leagues – qualities United’s forward line lacked in key moments last season.
United’s official statement reads: “Manchester United has reached agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha. The Brazilian forward’s signing is subject to visa and registration.”
It is a deal that shows United are no longer chasing transfer headlines. Instead, they’re prioritising functionality, adaptability, and work ethic, traits Cunha has exhibited in abundance at Wolves.
Cunha brings with him a rich and varied footballing background. With 13 senior caps for Brazil, he has also made 270 appearances and scored 72 goals across top-flight competitions in England, Spain, Germany, and Switzerland. These aren’t numbers that leap off the page, but they do speak to consistency and resilience.
His recent Premier League form has certainly warranted attention. “During two-and-a-half seasons at Wolves, Cunha has scored 33 goals in 92 appearances.”
That’s a goal every 2.7 games, a return that becomes even more impressive when measured against Wolves’ relatively modest attacking numbers.
Cunha is known for more than goals. He presses relentlessly, drops deep when needed, and links midfield to attack, qualities that suit Ruben Amorim’s reported tactical preferences, especially in a 3-4-2-1 shape where mobile forwards are crucial.

With Rasmus Højlund leading the line last season and struggling for consistent support, Cunha offers a fresh dimension. He can play centrally or as a support striker, giving Amorim flexibility in how he constructs his forward unit.
Crucially, United’s recruitment now appears joined-up. In Cunha, they’re not just buying a scorer but a connector. He brings fight, flair, and understanding, a player who improves others.
“Everyone at Manchester United looks forward to welcoming Matheus to Old Trafford.”
That line may feel routine in club announcements, but it underlines how this deal has the backing of those shaping United’s new era.
This isn’t about shirt sales or transfer hype. It’s a calculated move to bring in a footballer with purpose. At 26, Cunha is entering his prime, and after a standout campaign at Molineux, he arrives with rhythm and relevance. This is not a signing to appease critics, but one to build around.
United need more of these – steady reinforcements who improve the collective. With further signings expected and key decisions looming over outgoings, Cunha’s arrival is a signal that Old Trafford’s recruitment machine is beginning to reflect a more modern, intelligent footballing model.
